About the place
The area now known as the Deoria District was once a part
of the Kosala Kingdom - a prime centre of ancient Aryan culture
surrounded by the Himalayas in the north, the Shyandika river in
the south, the Panchala Kingdom in the west and the Magadh Kingdom
in Bihar to the east.On a major rail line to Bihar state, it is an
agricultural trade centre. Its principal industry is sugar milling.
Major crops grown in the surrounding agricultural area include
sugarcane, rice, oilseeds, and pulses; there are also a number of
sugar-processing factories. Nearby Kushinagara, the reputed place
of Buddha’s death and cremation, is a pilgrimage centre
